Travel to Japan made easier by lifting restrictions on entry and resuming visa waiver (Oct 11, 22)

Sources and Summary of Japan's Lifting of Entry Restrictions

On September 30, 2022, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan announced on the website of the Ministry of External Affairs that it would lift restrictions on inspections upon arrival at quarantine stations, self-quarantine at home or accommodation, and refraining from using public transportation.

According to the notice, persons entering Japan as of 00:00 on October 11, 2022 must have a valid COVID-19 vaccination certificate (3 doses) on the World Health Organization (WHO) urgent use list or from the country/region of origin. You just need to present proof of negative results of a COVID-19 test conducted within 72 hours prior to departure.

Detailed information published by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan can be found on the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs' Consular Service (https://www.mofa.go.jp/ca/fna/page4e_001053.html).

With the lifting of Japan's entry restrictions, people who have been thinking about or planning to travel to Japan will be able to travel freely in two years.

In addition, those who have received the vaccine up to the 3rd time do not need to submit a certificate of negative COVID-19 test result (PCR test negative certificate) performed within 72 hours before entering the country and PCR test after entering the country.

Notice regarding submission of negative test results for COVID-19 before entering Japan

Those who have not received the 3rd dose of the vaccine must submit a certificate of negative COVID-19 test result within 72 hours prior to entry.

Also, the restriction on the number of arrivals to 50,000 per day has been lifted, so you only need to register your vaccination certificate and MySOS, which is similar to the Q-Code you register before entering Korea in Korea, so it is similar to when you travel to Japan before the outbreak of Corona 19.

Of course, during the Fast Track registration process, a separate quarantine system must be followed for symptomatic individuals.

Things to prepare when entering Japan

1. Certificate of COVID-19 vaccination completed by the 3rd round

Arrivals entering Japan must submit a COVID-19 vaccination certificate or COVID-19 negative test result, which must be a certificate issued by a government or public institution or an inoculation record issued by a medical institution. Or, it must be a document that is recognized as equivalent.

The COVID-19 vaccination certificate must be written in Japanese or English, and items such as name, date of birth, vaccine name/manufacturer, vaccination date, and number of vaccinations must be written in Japanese or English.

* Even if the certificate does not include the date of birth, it may still be considered valid if it contains a passport number or other information that can be used to verify that the vaccination certificate is yours.

* If the vaccination certificate is in a language other than Japanese or English, it will be considered valid if a Japanese or English translation can be attached and the contents can be verified.

The types of COVID-19 vaccines recognized in Japan are:

  • Pfizer

  • Moderna

  • AstraZeneca

  • Janssen

  • Bharat Biotech

  • Novavax

Most vaccines vaccinated in Korea are accepted, so if you have completed the 3rd dose and have a certificate in English or Japanese, there is no problem.

2. Quarantine procedures before entry

  • Filling out the questionnaire

  • writing a pledge

  • Check the vaccination certificate or check the test certificate within 72 hours before departure

  • MySOS installation and login

3. Register for Fast Track (My SOS)

Pre-registration must be completed on MySOS Web or MySOS app at least 6 hours before the scheduled arrival date of the boarding flight. Quarantine measures vary depending on the place of stay before entering the country and the presence or absence of the third vaccination. Detailed quarantine measures can be found on the website of the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare ( https://www.hco.mhlw.go.jp/ ).

You can check the applicable quarantine measures by selecting the region and country of residence on the homepage and selecting information about the vaccine you have been vaccinated.

If the My SOS mobile application is not installed, you can download it by clicking the image below for each smartphone you are using.

Step 1. Install and run MySOS app

  1. Click the image corresponding to the smartphone you are using from the link above to download and install the app.

  2. Run the downloaded app and tap the 'Pre-registration for quarantine procedure' button.

Step 2. Register the required documents in the MySOS app

  1. Follow the instructions in the app to register necessary documents such as passport, questionnaire, registration of pledge, vaccination certificate, or test certificate within 72 hours before departure.

Step 3. Review and Approval

  1. When the verification of the registered contents in the app is completed, the app screen turns green or blue.

  • If you apply at least 6 hours prior to the scheduled arrival date of your boarding flight, the screening will be completed until Immigration.

  • The screen of the app turns yellow until the vaccination certificate is registered as "None" and the verification of the test certificate is completed within 72 hours before departure.

  • If there are any inaccuracies in the application content, when it turns red, you must register again.

Step 4. Immigration Procedure

  • When showing the MySOS screen when entering Japan, if the screen is green or blue, just display the screen to complete the MySOS installation confirmation, questionnaire, pledge registration, vaccination certificate confirmation, or PCR test certificate confirmation process within 72 hours before departure.

  • In the case of a yellow screen, just showing the screen completes the MySOS installation confirmation, questionnaire, pledge registration, and vaccination certificate confirmation process.
